With her permission, our program would like to tell you the story of a beer promotion girl. ‘' A'' was an orphan, aged 20, who was responsible for supporting her old grandmother and a younger brother who was in school. Her grandmother was living in the provinces, while she followed her friends to Phnom Penh in search of a job. Because of her beauty and young age, she was soon able to find a job as a beer promotion girl for a company. Every night, she was taken by bus to work at various restaurants in Phnom Penh . She could make more money than her other friends because she was more popular with men who were satisfied with her services in pouring beer and keeping them company. They usually gave her good tips. Gradually, because of the need for
money and her personal indulgences, she was tempted into becoming a sex worker,

providing sex services to many men. She said that sometimes she had sex using condoms and sometimes without using condoms. As time passed, she had countless sexual partners. One day she became a mistress of a rich old man who had been married. The man stopped her from working as a beer promotion girl. He was willing to pay for her living and found her a decent home.

One year later, she and the man had a baby boy. Her life seemed to get better but this happiness did not last long. News of their affair reached the man's wife. The wife was trying by every means to separate the girl from her husband and to destroy her and her son. Because she could not bear the difficult situation any longer, the girl decided to leave the man and returned with her son to her hometown. Her son was almost one year old then. He was frequently sick and grew far slower than her neighbors' children. One day, the boy was very sick with dengue fever and needed a blood transfusion. She was told then that the boy was HIV-infected. She was very frightened to hear this and thought the boy must have been infected by her. She agreed to have a blood test as advised by the doctor. The result showed that she was indeed HIV positive.
